Even from prison, former Brazilian head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva can shape the outcome of the presidential race in October, political consultancy Eurasia Group says.

Lula, who is likely to be barred from standing but remains hugely popular, will be able to transfer significant support to whomever he chooses as his successor, according to Christopher Garman, Eurasia Group’s director for the Americas. An alliance between Lula’s Workers’ Party and the other prominent left-wing candidate, Ciro Gomes, is unlikely, he said.
