It’s glaringly obvious that Peter Mandelson should never have been appointed Britain’s ambassador to Washington. That’s not hindsight: It was clear when he was handed the job by Prime Minister Keir Starmer to widespread incredulity given his inglorious track record.

Among the many reasons for seeing the appointment as a catastrophe in the making were Mandelson’s known relationship with Jeffrey Epstein — which included staying in the financier’s home while he was incarcerated for soliciting a minor — his business links to China and Russia, and his past indiscretions in government that led to two resignations.
