Farage Mega Donor Exposes Vulnerability in UK Politics

The £12 million ($16 million) that Christopher Harborne gave to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK last year wouldn’t be permitted in France, Canada or Ireland. If you’re sensing something askew with the UK’s rules for campaign finance contributions, you’re not alone.
There’s no suggestion that Harborne has done anything wrong. The businessman added £3 million in the fourth quarter to an earlier £9 million contribution that was the single biggest UK political donation ever made by a living individual (supermarket magnate John Sainsbury left £10 million to the Conservative Party on his death in 2022). The system is working the way it’s supposed to: If you’re on the UK electoral register, no matter how long you’ve lived overseas, then you’re a permissible donor — and there are no caps on the size of contributions.
