Brazil Can't Afford Another Supreme Court Scandal

Carnaval may be winding down, but the political scandal shaking Brazil’s establishment is only gathering steam.

Months after the spectacular collapse of Banco Master, the politically-connected lender liquidated at an estimated cost of 55 billion reais ($10.5 billion) for the deposit insurance fund, the fallout continues to spread, staining the Supreme Court’s reputation. The justice overseeing the investigation into the fast-growing bank’s downfall, José Antonio Dias Toffoli, agreed last week to step aside amid mounting pressure from his fellow justices.
