MAGA’s Attempt to Infiltrate Europe Will Backfire

How not to win friends and influence people.

There’s no putting off an overly intrusive friend with a savior complex. The Trump administration is preparing to go to even greater lengths to persuade Europe to return to the path of righteousness and adopt its conception of US freedom of speech. The campaign would carry more sway if its own house was in order.

A year after Vice President JD Vance stunned the Munich Security Conference by lambasting Europe’s “retreat” from fundamental values, the State Department is planning to fund MAGA-aligned think tanks and charities across the continent to disseminate Washington’s policy positions and challenge perceived threats to free speech, according to the Financial Times. This follows visits to four European capitals by Under Secretary of State Sarah Rogers in December, in what was titled a “freedom of speech tour.”
