United Parcel Service Inc. will endure one more year of pain as the package-delivery giant shrinks to become more profitable and better positions itself for growth.
That’s the pledge from Chief Executive Officer Carol Tomé, who has been reducing UPS’s exposure to low-margin business from Amazon.com Inc. and accelerating automation to make up for the most expensive labor force in the US parcel industry. Investors are buying into the plan, driving up the stock more than 3% on Tuesday after the company reported quarterly earnings.
