When New York newsstands were more ubiquitous years ago, and checkout lines featured a wide array of print publications, the Weekly World News jumped out at me. Its covers were a carnival of dubious stories, related with gusto and bespoke, trashy, lunatic brilliance.

While WWN continues as an online property (“The World’s Only Reliable News”), the mojo just isn’t the same. Fans old enough to remember have favorite covers from the print era. Mine, a relatively sedate choice, was “World War 2 Bomber Found on the Moon!” I liked that one simply because WWN later followed up its “scoop” with a startling cover revealing that the bomber had somehow gone missing.
