Trump’s Iran Blockade Threat Risks Escalating Conflict

Once again, hopes for an agreement to end the war in the Middle East have come to naught. Donald Trump has doubled down by threatening to blockade the Strait of Hormuz — a move which will likely further restrict supplies of crude and inflict deeper pain on the global economy — after the US and Iran failed to reach a deal in talks in Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, Trump said he didn’t care if Iran returned to the negotiating table, arguing the US had already achieved its military objectives. “If they don’t come back, I’m fine,” he said.
