Hungary’s New Leader Promises New Era for EU Relations
Peter Magyar said he wants to bring his country back into the European fold.
Peter Magyar, Hungary’s next prime minister, said in Budapest today that he wants to bring his country back into the European fold. Speaking in his first post-election news conference, he laid out plans to shore up the country’s economy and dismantle the system put in place by outgoing leader Viktor Orban.
He called for a swift transition of power following the historic election, in which voters turned out in record numbers. Magyar said he spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who in turn said she would start working with the new Hungarian government “as soon as possible.”
