We are entering the fourth week of the Iran war and now encountering what is at least President Donald Trump’s fourth advertised goal for the conflict. After offering regime change, ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and degrading the Islamic republic’s arsenal of missiles and drones, Trump has in the last few days focused on another: Bringing down oil prices.
Which is to say that Trump has within a month shifted the stated objective of the war from foreign policy and strategic targets to an economic one. Or that he has been forced quickly to find a way to address the economic consequences of the war he chose to begin.
