If Prime Minister Mark Carney has a reputation as a globe-trotting elite who wows the Davos crowd, his main rival, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, has a decidedly different profile.

Conventional wisdom in Canada holds that Poilievre lost to Carney in the 2025 election primarily because voters were focused on who was best to handle Donald Trump, while the Conservative leader talked about tax cuts, housing prices and crime. Poilievre has long prioritized domestic concerns over foreign affairs.
