In a year when even a bag of lettuce feels like a luxury, the last thing Americans needed was a surge in gasoline prices on the back of an unpopular war. The White House’s top economist had a palliative message Tuesday: gas prices will come down, the economy is fine, the administration has a plan for disruptions.
