Wealthy Sydney Suburbs Brace for Housing Fight

Believe it or not, Australia’s major cities are among the least dense in the developed world — with far more room to build than New York, Tokyo or London. For decades, leafy inner suburbs have largely avoided the apartment boom reshaping global capitals. But that may be about to change.

As the housing crisis deepens, state and federal governments are pushing wealthier neighborhoods to take on more development. My colleagues Swati Pandey and Aradhana Aravindan have been speaking to residents of Sydney’s Woollahra, where a proposal for 10,000 new homes is testing just how much change some of our most exclusive postcodes are willing to accept.
