China kicked off military maneuvers around Taiwan on Monday, warning ships to avoid five zones around the self-ruled democracy’s main island due to live-fire exercises. The latest display of indignation comes after the US earlier this month approved an $11 billion arms sale package to Taipei — one of its biggest ever.

The exercises would involve the army, navy, air force and Rocket Force and were a “necessary action to safeguard China’s sovereignty and national unity,” the Chinese military said in a statement. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry meanwhile deemed them “irrational provocative actions.”
