A crushing 50% tariff on some Indian exports to the US took effect Wednesday, dealing a heavy blow to the South Asian economy and its ambition to become a major manufacturing hub rivaling China.

President Donald Trump’s decision doubles the previous levy, making India’s rate the highest in Asia. While the US has justified the move as a rebuke for India’s buying of Russian oil, New Delhi has argued the purchases stabilize energy markets.
