On Friday, a remarkable event in Cambodia illustrated some of the seismic changes occurring in the art world. At a ceremony in the capital, Phnom Penh, local officials and foreign dignitaries celebrated the repatriation of more than 100 artifacts from collections in the US and Europe—products of a sprawling multinational investigation into antiquities-smuggling. Many of the Cambodians in attendance were visibly moved, pausing to pray before the statues, which were arrayed around a vast reception hall.
