These Are the Chinese Cars That the US Will Be Missing Out On
China’s top automotive event of the year showcased the new technologies emerging out of the cutthroat market.
The world’s biggest auto show is underway in Beijing, with plenty of shiny new vehicles on display. AI and other technologies were the dominant trend as China widens its automotive lead over the rest of the world. While many of these wheeled computers will be zipping through the streets of Beijing and Shanghai in the coming months, one place you won’t see them is in the US, which has effectively blocked Chinese cars from being sold there.
China’s BYD Co. predictably had one of the largest footprints, and Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. took over half of a hall at Beijing’s vast new convention center, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Smartphone makers Xiaomi Corp. and Huawei Technologies Co. proved that, well, they can’t just be considered tech gadget companies anymore. Determined not to cede any more share to local incumbents, European automakers were out in force too, showcasing Chinese versions of their vehicles that you won’t find anywhere in New York City or Silicon Valley.
