Angélica Gómez was awakened at 6 a.m. to loud knocking on her front door. “You have 10 minutes to leave the apartment!” shouted one of the men dressed in police uniform standing outside her home.
Drowsy and confused, she asked the man for more time to get dressed. She called the police — she couldn’t be sure that he was an actual officer — and then she called her father, who lived in the same building on República de Cuba Street in Mexico City’s center. He too was facing a sudden eviction that late August morning.
