Talk of financial fasting, or giving up spending for Lent, is bubbling up across social media. Nearly 1,500 videos on TikTok alone are tagged #nobuy2026, while surveys show Americans leaning into frugal-living challenges and cutting back discretionary purchases. Interpretations of what constitutes a fast vary: Some aim to avoid non-essential spending completely, while others cut back on specific shopping habits.
