Mike Duggan steered Detroit back from financial ruin. For his next act, the popular former Motor City mayor has abandoned his party and is running for governor as an independent in one of the most divided states in America.

Duggan, who quit the Democratic party last year, has been credited with transforming America’s automotive capital from blighted and bankrupt to vital and thriving. He says Democrats and Republicans are too beholden to their fringe — and voters are sick of it.
