India’s Richest Family Powers Push for Green Space in Mumbai

The Coastal Road Garden is the latest billionaire-led redevelopment project in the megacity.

The relentless development of Mumbai in recent years has left its residents with little in the way of open, green spaces. Now the city is turning to a billionaire to change that.

Reliance Industries Ltd., helmed by India’s richest family, the Ambanis, said in August that it would build a “green lung” for Mumbai with the 130-acre Coastal Road Garden, which will sit on reclaimed land. The announcement was made at Reliance’s annual general meeting by Nita Ambani, who chairs the conglomerate’s foundation as the family increasingly looks to burnish their image as the country’s top patrons of sports and culture.
