Boston’s South Station Gets a Towering Makeover

With South Station Tower, developer Hines dropped a trophy office and residential building on top of the city’s historic 19th-century train station.

Boston’s newest skyscraper sprouts up from one of the city’s oldest buildings, and since its grand opening in September, it’s been prompting curiosity and admiration — and also a little angst.

The 51-story, nearly 700-foot-tall tower, developed by Hines with Pelli Clarke & Partners as architects and Suffolk Construction as general contractor, is the ultimate shiny object, all dark glass on the outside and white marble within, a lush park on the 9th floor and an infinity pool on the 36th. Some 166 Ritz-Carlton-branded condominiums boast breathtaking panoramic views.
