‘Food deserts’ spreading as stubborn inflation keeps produce out of reach for millions of people
The chickpeas, tomatoes and peppers spilling out of the delivery box used to be novelty items for at-risk Bristol residents like Nikkita.
The city in southwest England is home to a so-called food desert, with 1 in 12 households having little or no access to affordable fresh produce amid a bevy of fast-food restaurants and convenience stores. For Nikkita, that meant a routine of unhealthy takeout meals and frozen foods.
