Myanmar Junta Frees Ex-President Win Myint in Mass Amnesty

Photographer: Thet Aung/AFP/Getty ImagesFormer Myanmar president Win Myint, detained since the 2021 military coup in the Southeast Asian nation, was pardoned and freed on Friday as part of a mass amnesty to mark the traditional new year, according to a statement from the office of President Min Aung Hlaing.
Win Myint, a close ally and loyalist of former de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, was among some 4,500 prisoners to be released in the amnesty, which also saw 179 foreign inmates pardoned. Foreign prisoners will be deported to their countries as soon as possible after being let go.
