Analilia Mejia, a longtime labor organizer backed by Bernie Sanders, is projected to win a special election in suburban New Jersey by about 20 percentage points, marking another strong showing for Democrats ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Mejia, 48, is leading Republican Joe Hathaway with 60% of the vote, after 94% of the ballots were counted, according to the Associated Press, which called the race just seven minutes after polls closed. Mejia will fill the seat — the 11th Congressional District — vacated by Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who became New Jersey’s governor earlier this year.
