Modi’s Rivals Unite to Block India Parliament Expansion Plan
India’s opposition parties are uniting against a plan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to expand the size of parliament, which they say will give the ruling party more power and widen disparities between the southern and northern states.
A special session of the parliament, scheduled to begin Thursday, is expected to include a constitutional amendment to increase the number of lawmakers in the lower house, which requires a two-thirds majority for approval. Opposition leaders, some of whom are in the middle of regional election campaigns, have all voiced disapproval of the legislation.
