Somali lawmakers failed to elect a new president as the parliament’s current term came to an end on Tuesday, creating fresh uncertainty in the Horn of Africa nation that’s suffered years of political instability.

Current President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s tenure expires on May 15 and he “must urgently present a credible plan for the next election,” former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said in a post on X. Failing to do so would destabilize the country, he warned.
