South African President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed veteran political negotiator Roelf Meyer as the country’s next ambassador to the US, as Pretoria seeks to steady relations with Washington after a turbulent year.

Meyer, 78, replaces Ebrahim Rasool, who was expelled from the US last year after he criticized the Trump administration. Presidency spokesman Vincent Magwenya confirmed the appointment, first reported by Bloomberg, to state broadcaster SABC.
