The Pentagon is sitting on a growing backlog of dozens of proposed US wind farms and withholding authorizations key for developing the power projects.

At issue are formal Defense Department reviews of the ventures — a process meant to ensure the projects don’t imperil national security by unduly interfering with military operations. The Pentagon’s vetting can result in agreements with developers to mitigate risks, with final determinations forwarded to the Federal Aviation Administration for separate scrutiny of impacts on airspace.
