California Democrat Eric Swalwell and Texas Republican Tony Gonzales officially resigned their congressional seats Tuesday in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct.

The lawmakers’ resignation letters were read on the House floor when its daily session opened, with Swalwell’s taking effect immediately and Gonzales’ at the end of the day. Both had announced plans to depart on Monday amid calls for their resignation or expulsion by fellow lawmakers.
