How Trump Blocked UK Deal to Hand Chagos Islands to Mauritius

The UK’s plan to cede ownership of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius looks to have become a casualty of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s falling out with US President Donald Trump.

The deal signed with Mauritius would’ve ended more than two centuries of British control over the Indian Ocean archipelago, while allowing the UK to make annual payments to maintain a key military base with US forces on the largest island of Diego Garcia.
