KoBold Metals Co. has begun exploring for lithium in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in what the US firm described as the largest-ever campaign for the battery metal.

The company – which is backed by investors including Bill Gates and venture giant Andreessen Horowitz – has acquired 13 licenses in southeastern Congo to search for deposits of the key battery metal and other minerals.
