Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar said he was “cautiously optimistic” about the outcome of an election that independent polls had indicated could end Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s 16-year rule.

Hungarians turned out in record numbers for the parliamentary ballot on Sunday, which has become a referendum on Orban’s increasingly authoritarian rule and a geopolitical flashpoint for Europe, Russia and the US. The results are expected in the course of the evening.
