The US allowed non-emergency workers and family members of employees at its embassy in Nigeria to leave, citing threats it deemed credible and a deteriorating security situation in the West African nation.

The State Department issued the authorization in an update to an advisory summary to “reflect changes to US embassy operations,” according to a statement on its website. It also recommended its citizens not travel to five of Nigeria’s 36 states.
