Sheinbaum Allies Seek Stricter Rules for Electing Judges
Top allies of President Claudia Sheinbaum are seeking stricter rules for Mexico’s judicial elections even as she stands by the reform approved under her predecessor, which opened up the courts to judges they consider unfit for the job.
Javier Corral, head of the Senate’s judiciary committee, and Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, a leader of Sheinbaum’s Morena party in the lower house, said in interviews they plan to propose changes less than a year after Mexico held its first elections as part of a sweeping overhaul of the judiciary approved in 2024.
