Long Island Rail Road workers are threatening to strike as soon as May 16 as union leaders and transit officials have yet to reach an agreement on wage increases even with the help of a federal mediation board.

A group of five unions, including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, haven’t had a raise in nearly four years as the parties have been negotiating a new labor agreement. They’re seeking a retroactive 9.5% wage increase over three years and a 5% increase in the final year, which is 2026.
