The flagship store of one of Japan’s hottest stationery brands is unremarkable from the outside. You could easily miss the alleyway entrance on the ground floor of Hobonichi Co.’s seven-story Tokyo headquarters. Inside, however, is a haven for paper lovers from around the world. Tourists spend hours filling baskets with pencil pouches, sticky notes, calendars and stacks of the brand’s signature product: the Hobonichi Techo, a slim personal planner that comes in a bevy of colors and formats and sells for about ¥2,600 ($16) in Japan.

“There are not many stores in the UK where you can feel surrounded by people with the same planning interests,” says Emma Lethbridge, who made her first pilgrimage from her home in Leeds, England, to the Tokyo shop in 2024. She showed off her haul in a YouTube video that’s racked up more than 2,000 views. Lethbridge has used many different sizes and variations of the Techo, including multiple planners to track her schedule, finances, health and exercise—part of what she and other organizational enthusiasts call a “journal ecosystem.”
