Velasco Tapped to Be Top Mexico Diplomat in Cabinet Switch
Mexican diplomat Roberto Velasco is set to become the country’s next foreign minister after his predecessor stepped down for health reasons, marking the latest shake up in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s cabinet.
Velasco previously served as deputy minister for North America, where he helped manage Mexico’s high-stakes relationship with the US, its top trading partner. His promotion needs to be ratified by the Senate, which is expected since Sheinbaum’s ruling Morena party commands a large majority in the chamber.
