US Agencies Leave About 70% of Office Space Unused, Data Show

The US government is using less than a third of its office space, potentially costing the federal government billions in annual real estate expenses, according to a new congressionally mandated accounting released Tuesday.

The first-of-its kind report sets the stage for the Trump administration to follow up with widespread sales of federal buildings and cancellations of office leases — the kinds of efficiency measures that Elon Musk’s DOGE initiative had sought last year.
