Buckingham Palace announced plans for King Charles III to visit Washington next month, even as President Donald Trump stepped up his criticism of the UK over its lack of support for his military campaign against Iran.

The decision to go ahead despite the messy public spat with Trump shows how keen Prime Minister Keir Starmer is to avoid a permanent rupture in London’s “special relationship” with Washington. The state visit — Charles’s first such trip since becoming king in 2022 — comes as the US prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of its independence from Britain.
