President Xi Jinping invited the leader of Taiwan’s largest opposition party to visit China for the first time in a decade, setting up a potential meeting one month before Donald Trump’s scheduled summit in Beijing.

Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, who has advocated for closer ties to China, will travel there from April 7 to 12, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Monday. Cheng has been vocal about wanting to meet Xi since taking the post, and has also sought to slash a bigger defense budget demanded by the US president.
