Chancellor Friedrich Merz said some 80% of Syrians who fled the country’s civil war for Germany should be able to return home over the next three years as an end to the bloody conflict and reconstruction open the possibility of repatriation.

Speaking alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Berlin, the German leader said that many Syrians who are well integrated in the German workforce will remain in the country. But many are “needed at home” to help rebuild the country, a project supported by both leaders.
