Germany warned the European Union’s rules to curb methane emissions from oil and gas imports risk impeding crucial LNG purchases just as the country seeks to diversify suppliers and cushion the Middle East war’s impact on energy prices.

“The Methane Regulation could hinder partner countries’ exports of LNG or their imports into Europe,” economy minister Katherina Reiche told reporters in Berlin Monday. She called for “a pragmatic implementation” of the rules into national law, and said penalties for violations “must be approached with a sense of proportion.”
