The UK government temporarily restarted an ethanol plant over concerns that the Iran war will cause a shortage of carbon dioxide, a byproduct used widely in food production and healthcare.

The Ensus plant at Wilton in the northeast of England, which was mothballed last year, will run for three months, the Department for Business and Trade said in a statement on Thursday. The CO2 it produces can be used to stun pigs and chickens for slaughter, as well as in packaging to extend shelf life and dry ice that keeps items frozen during delivery.
