EU Enlargement Chief Says Montenegro in ‘Endgame’ of Accession

Montenegro is the “the most advanced country on the path” to joining the European Union but still needs to speed up reforms required for membership, according to the bloc’s top official for enlargement.

“We need to bring it over the line,” Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos told reporters Thursday in the capital Podgorica after talks with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic. She cited the strengthening of the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and media freedom as key areas where work remains, even as she said the country was in the “endgame” of accession.
