Margins were already tight in a city with some of the steepest rents in the world, so when prolonged restrictions took effect, it proved too much for countless establishments. Combined with contentious politics many people left the city, sparking a big demographic shift; growing competition from nearby Shenzhen, whose expanding and more affordable dining scene had begun drawing customers away, only exacerbated the problem.
