Cuba has begun a slow recovery from Saturday’s nationwide blackout, a crisis exacerbated by the US fuel embargo and mounting pressure on Havana.

As of Sunday morning, authorities have successfully restarted “microsystems,” or isolated power pockets, in western and central regions to provide electricity to hospitals and water pumps. Technical teams aim to unify these two regional grids this morning before attempting to reconnect the eastern provinces to the national system, energy official Lázaro Guerra Hernández said in a TV interview.
