The UK’s large-scale cut to its aid budget will fall on some of the world’s poorest and most unstable countries, as campaigners and Members of Parliament warn of Britain’s declining soft power.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Thursday detailed how the government will spend its reduced aid allocation by prioritizing nations hit by wars and crises, including Sudan, Ukraine and Gaza. That comes a year after Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer said aid spending will be cut to 0.3% of economic output in 2027 from a previous target of 0.5%, with the savings spent on defence.
