California to Rename César Chavez Day Following Sex Abuse Claims
California lawmakers said they will seek to rename upcoming César Chavez Day as Farmworkers Day, after a series of sexual abuse allegations surfaced against the late labor leader.
California was the first state to establish a holiday to honor Chavez on March 31, his birthday, more than two decades ago. Chavez’s name is also emblazoned across street names, schools, parks, state buildings and other urban structures in the US.
