UK Green Party Leader Calls for Wealth Tax, Energy Bailout
Britain’s insurgent Green Party called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to hike taxes on businesses and the wealthy in order to subsidize household bills as the US war on Iran pushes energy prices higher.
Ministers should set aside £8.4 billion ($11.2 billion) in order to keep power and gas bills down beyond the end of June, when a price cap shielding consumers is due to end, Green Party Leader Zack Polanski said in a speech at the left-wing New Economics Foundation on Wednesday. He also argued for capital gains tax to be equalized with income tax, a tiered levy on wealth and for Labour to “tighten up” its existing levy on oil and gas companies.
